Ash Harvesting and Beneficiation

Eco Material Technologies provides comprehensive ash harvesting and beneficiation services, recovering fly ash and other coal combustion products (CCPs) from both active power plants and legacy pond and landfill impoundments. With one of the largest CCP logistics and processing networks in the country, Eco Material Technologies manages the full value chain from source to end market—ensuring material quality, regulatory compliance, and supply continuity for customers.

Pond and Landfill Ash Harvesting

As the energy landscape evolves, utilities are finding new opportunities to responsibly close and remediate CCP impoundments in compliance with federal and state regulations, including the EPA’s Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) rule. Eco Material Technologies partners with utilities to excavate, process, and beneficially reuse ash stored in legacy ponds and landfills, transforming dormant stockpiles into a valuable and sustainable resource.

Harvested pond ash undergoes characterization and, where necessary, processing to meet ASTM C618 or other applicable specifications. Beneficial use of harvested ash reduces the volume requiring disposal, lowers closure costs for utilities, and extends the supply of fly ash available to the construction market as fresh ash production from active plants continues to diminish.

Beneficiation

Not all fly ash produced at a power plant is immediately suitable for use as a supplementary cementitious material. Variability in coal source, combustion conditions, and carbon content can result in ash that does not meet ASTM C618 specifications without further processing. Eco Material Technologies applies a range of beneficiation technologies to upgrade off-spec or marginal ash into a marketable, specification-grade product.

Beneficiation capabilities include:

• Air classification and particle size separation to meet fineness requirements
• Blending of ash streams to achieve consistent chemistry and physical properties
• Chemical treatment, including RestoreAir®, to address activated carbon interference with air entrainment in concrete

In addition, Eco Material Technologies offers the ES EcoSystem Efficient Carbon Offloading ™ technology—a proprietary solution that offers a lower-cost and greener process to reduce high-carbon content in landfilled and ponded coal ash, bringing it up to required specification for use in concrete and other building materials.

These capabilities allow Eco Material Technologies to maximize the volume of beneficial use material recovered from each source, supporting both utility partners and end-use customers who depend on consistent, high-quality fly ash supply.
